It’s time to hit the promotional trail again. It pretty much begins with the comple- tion of fall harvest. Now that our favorite vegetable has been safely tucked into storage we can head out to tell the world about our “tuber treasures.” We’ve got it all: table- stock, seed, chipping, and processing potatoes. Our growers in the Valley have something for everyone. We’ve got alot to crow about here in the Red River Valley. One local promotion that draws alot of attention to our beloved potato is Potato Bowl, USA. It is now history for another year as it was staged during the middle of September. There was a week long celebration including a queen pag- eant, parade, and football game. The world’s largest serving of French Fries was served at a pep rally on Friday the 20th, the night before the football game. During the beat of the festivities, our growers, for the most part were hard at work bringing in the spuds. But the idea was to recognize them for their dedica- tion to the community. The first big step out of the shot is our trip to Boston this month. The dates are October 19-22 and the theme is “Journey To The Future.” We signed a contract with Produce Marketing Association back in December of 1990 to secure a booth. Since that time the paperwork has been flowing in. The exhibitors manual must weigh a pound and is it ever packed with information. Registration must be made for atten- dees, then room reservations are made from a selection of hotels. Then there are amenities to the booth that must be ordered from carpeting to tables to elec- tricity. The last but not least part of the planning is to make arrangements for shipping our booth. Then those of us going to the exposition board a plane and away we go. On the road again!, I must admit, it is pretty exciting traveling around the country. But, the fact is, it’s even more exciting that we have one hot potato to promote. That makes my job easy! And Produce Marketing Exposition is a good vehicle for us to promote our potatoes. This year, the Red River Valley will be visible on the streets of Boston for three days during the convention. A decision was made by the Promotion Committee to co-sponsor the shuttle buses that run from hotel to hotel and to and from the Hynes Convention Center in down- town Boston.
