Warm, windy con- ditions helped dry out soils and allowed for more fieldwork and planting to be done. The exception was the northern part of the State where large amounts of snow were received this winter and muddy soils still exist. Some isolated areas in the northeast were still experi- encing flooding. Temperatures for the week averaged two to six degrees above normal. Reports indicated that, on average, producers intended to begin field- work on April 20. There were 3.6 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 1 percent very short, 6 short, 71 adequate, and 22 surplus. Subsoil moisture sup- plies rated 2 percent very short, 7 short, 74 adequate, and 17 surplus. Winter wheat condition rated 4 per- cent very poor, 2 poor, 17 fair, 73 good, and 4 excellent. Winter wheat jointing was 2 percent, near 1 last year. Spring wheat planted was 6 percent, behind 13 last year and 11 for the five-year average. Emerged was 1 percent, near 0 last year, but equal to average. Durum wheat planted was 1 percent, near 3 last year, but behind 5 average. Barley planted was 2 percent, behind 9 last year and 7 average. Canola planted was 1 percent. Flaxseed planted was 1 percent. Oats planted was 2 per- cent, behind 13 last year and 10 average. Sugarbeets planted was 12 percent, behind 21 last year, and near 15 average.
