M A Y / J U N E 2 0 1 7 POTATO GROWER 19 showed little or no hollow heart in Goldrush, but a fairly large amount in several other popular russet vari- eties. Some other outstanding char- acteristics are good scab resistance, some resistance to Verticillium wilt, and blackspot bruising. This new russet variety bakes and boils very white but in some cases has a slight waxy texture. Goldrush has an excellent flavor and has extremely white flesh both before and after cooking. It would appear because of its hol- low heart resistance, this new russet variety should be well adapted for the production of count carton sized potatoes grown in the Red River Valley. Previous russet vari- eties have been limited for this pro- duction because of their susceptabil- ity to hollow heart. Hollow heart is an unpredictable physiogical dis- ease caused mainly by the weather. Excessive moisture during the sea- son can set off hollow heart. NDSU Plant Pathologist Dr. Gary Secor indicates that Goldrush shows typical symptoms of most major diseases, including PVY, which will be an aid to certification officials. (Some varieties hide these symp- toms, and therefore, can be major problems for growers). Dr. Secor fur- ther states that with proper disease control and extensive roguing, there should be little problem grow- ing this variety for seed certifica- tion. Preliminary tests by processors and the Department of Food and Nutrition at NDSU indicated that Goldrush could be used for the pro- duction of frozen French fries. Most tests indicated that Goldrush was comparable to Russet Burbank in processing for frozen French fries. According to Dr. Neil Gudmestad, Director of Potato Certification for North Dakota, seed for Goldrush should be available in ample supply for 1993 as it is anticipated that a fairly large acreage will be planted this spring. For the most part, this past years crop of seed has already been purchased. For more information visit strikefumigants.com If you have scab problems, we have the solution. Healthy Fields.
