The new APRE held a Potato and Physical and Mental Performance Think Tank at the end of January. This was a daylong roundtable brainstorm session with a handful of carbohydrate and exercise experts to discuss the state of the science on diet and physical performance. A roadmap was developed that will outline potential research questions to pursue which highlight the bene- fits of potatoes across the continu- um of performance as well as a thought paper for publication in a nutrition journal or magazine. For future studies, APRE has devel- oped strategically prioritized research pillars that will help to best achieve APRE’s vision within con- text of today’s environment. These new pillars will have a powerful research-based story that will edu- cate nutrition influencers and oth- ers on the benefits of eating pota- toes. The first pillar is focused on cardiometabolic health. Its goal is to positively position potatoes as a pre- ferred source of quality carbohy- drate with unique health benefits for those with and without car- diometabolic disease. Desired out- comes of this pillar include recog- nizing potatoes as a neutral and or beneficial to diabetes, heart health and healthy weight. The second pillar relates to potatoes in healthy dietary patterns. This pil- lar will seek to positively position potatoes as an important part of rec- ommended healthy eating patterns. The issues to be addressed include countering negative epidemiologic findings, addressing the negative health halo of the “company pota- toes keep”, and to emphasize nutri- ent density. The last pillar will be focused on fea- turing potatoes in healthy lifestyles. Its goal is to positively position potatoes as a nutrient-dense veg- etable and preferred source of quali- ty carbohydrate with unique health benefits throughout the lifespan.
