APRE has gone from having a physical pres- ence in Washington DC with inter- nal staff to a virtual entity. Administration is now facilitated by Potatoes USA. The policy and research consultancy, FoodMinds, is now leading the research efforts with their expert staff and extensive connections in the scientific and academic nutrition world. In addi- tion, Potatoes USA nutrition agency Fleishman Hillard and the National Potato Council’s nutrition agency Food Directions are supporting APRE in an enhanced agency collab- oration. Potatoes USA is now lead- ing the efforts to bring the results of the research to the nutrition com- munity and consumers; working with others in the industry to fur- ther broaden the reach. APRE’s goal is to expand the knowl- edge of influencers, within acade- mia and the government. APRE’s mission is to advance scientific understanding of the role potatoes play in promoting the health of all people. This mission has changed from the prior mission in that the old mission was to “expand and translate research” whereas now APRE strives to “advance the research”. The desired outcomes of the research will be to address cur- rent issues and therefore anticipate and mitigate future issues. Better collaboration will assure the research will be used by industry groups and private partners to rein- force knowledge of potatoes as a nutrient dense food. APRE currently has three epidemio- logical studies underway. One of the studies will compare potassium retention from fresh potatoes, French fries, and potassium supple- ments. This study hopes to demon- strate that potassium retention from potatoes is equal to or better than that of potassium supplements. Another study is to identify the role of white potatoes on subjective appetite, food intake, glycemic response, mood and memory per- formance in normal weight and overweight/obese children. Then finally a study that will demonstrate the impact of potatoes phenols on gastrointestinal transit and glycemic response. This study hopes to deter- mine the bioavailability of potato Potatoes USA Messa ge New Approach To Apre
